Your Brain Is Not Declining — It’s Waiting for the Right Conditions to Thrive

Last weekend, I had the privilege of attending one of the most intellectually energizing events of my year: the annual Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute (PLMI) Conference, this year focused on The Keys to Brain Resilience and Recovery. PLMI was founded by Dr. Jeffery Bland — widely known as the Father of Functional Medicine — and each year it delivers exactly what our patients deserve: the most current, evidence-based science available anywhere.

This year did not disappoint.

Alongside Dr. Bland, the stage was shared by luminaries including Dr. Dale Bredesen (the pioneer behind reversing Alzheimer’s), Dr. David Perlmutter (author of Grain Brain), and Dr. Patrick Hanaway — who also happens to be the physician who taught my GI courses through The Institute for Functional Medicine and co-founded the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine. These are the researchers and clinicians actively rewriting the rules of brain health — and I’m bringing everything I learned directly back to you and your care.

Here’s what the science is now telling us loud and clear:

You Are the Architect of Your Own Brain

This was perhaps the most powerful takeaway of the entire conference. Neurodegeneration is not your fate. Conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and mood disorders are not simply the result of bad genes or bad luck — they are largely the result of a brain locked in chronic inflammation, and that inflammation has identifiable, addressable causes.

The list includes: systemic inflammation, chronic infections, blood sugar dysregulation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, air pollution, pesticides and herbicides, heavy metals, sleep deprivation, and chronic psychological stress. Every single one of these is something we can measure, address, and improve — together.

This is the heart of functional medicine, and it’s exactly what we do at The Functional Wellness Clinic every day.

The Gut-Brain Connection: A Major Paradigm Shift

I’ll be honest — Dr. Hanaway’s presentation stopped me in my tracks. He delivered what I’d call the first major paradigm shift in how functional medicine approaches gut restoration — essentially in my entire career.

His message: “You cannot reseed a burning forest.”

The newest model of gut restoration prioritizes short-chain fatty acids and antioxidants before probiotics. If you’re a current patient of mine, this will sound familiar — we’ve already been working this way. But this new science gives me an even sharper precision in building your care plan. For those of you who’ve wondered why we approach things in a particular sequence, now you have the scientific backing.

Brain Inflammation Is Measurable — and Preventable

One of the most hopeful messages from the conference is this: we can now detect brain inflammation through a simple blood test. That means we don’t have to wait for symptoms to become severe before we act. Early detection and prevention are not only possible — they are far more effective and far more comfortable than managing late-stage progression.

A few specific numbers worth knowing:

  • Type 2 diabetes increases your risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 3 to 4 times. Monitoring fasting glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, and even wearing a continuous glucose monitor are accessible, powerful tools for protecting your brain — not just your blood sugar.
  • The brain is only 2% of your body mass but requires 20% of your total energy. Your mitochondria are the energy hubs that make this possible. Protecting mitochondrial function is protecting brain function.
  • Your immune system completely turns over every 3–4 months. You can genuinely remodel your health. It takes time, consistency, and the right strategy — but healing is real.

Food Is Biological Information

Every meal you eat is a message to your body. Ultraprocessed foods send misinformation. Whole foods contain over 25,000 phytochemicals with functions we haven’t even fully discovered yet. Mother Nature is ahead of science — and she always has been.

For those planning to grow their family: the research on preconception choline is striking. Women who eat egg yolks and sunflower seeds before and during pregnancy may meaningfully improve their child’s cognitive outcomes later in life. Cognitive decline, it turns out, can begin before a person is even born.

What This Means for Your Care

Functional medicine has always operated from the belief that the body has a remarkable capacity to heal when given the right conditions. What conferences like PLMI confirm, year after year, is that this isn’t philosophy — it’s biology.

At The Functional Wellness Clinic, my approach is rooted in exactly the science being presented by these leading researchers. Whether we’re looking at your gut health, metabolic markers, toxic burden, sleep quality, or stress response, we’re looking at the full picture of what’s driving — or protecting — your brain health.

You don’t have to accept cognitive decline as inevitable. You don’t have to wait until something is seriously wrong to start paying attention. The tools are here. The science is here.

And so am I.
